KFM-BFM Calls B.S. On Paper

• Seems that “a local San Diego newspaper” created some unnecessary controversy last week when it dramatically stated that the Dave, Shelly & Chainsaw (DSC) morning show on Tegna Variety Rock KFMB-FM(KFM-BFM)/San Diego was “being tossed aside through no fault of their own.” The popular show, which has been a part of the fabric of the market for nearly three decades — including stops at KGB-FM and KIOZ (Rock 102) — the last six at KFMB-FM, is reportedly nearing the end of its current contract. The cast includes hosts Dave Rickards, Shelly Dunn and Cookie “Chainsaw” Randolph (pictured), long with Ruth 66, Chris Boyer and Emily Maguire.

The San Diego Reader piece, citing “a source who did want to be identified,” breathlessly stated, “there has been no effort since Tegna took over the KFMB stations four months ago to communicate with the popular morning show.” Another “reliable source” went so far as to tell the paper, “Few believe that Tegna intends to keep KFMB-AM/FM. It’s a TV company and its management has shown no interest in running a competitive radio station.”

RAMP immediately reached out to Alberto Mier y Teran, President and GM of KFMB Stations, who went so far as to classify the Reader‘s account as “false,” while informing us that no one from that paper had bothered to contact him prior to publishing the story. As a matter of fact, Mier y Teran informed RAMP, “We are currently in negotiations with DSC and have been for awhile… we are working on renewing them on a long-term contract.”

So there. You are advised to watch this space for further factual updates.
