McLain Dials It Back After 57 Years
• After a colorful radio and television career that spans six decades — the last 14 years as OM and afternoon personality on Entercom News-Talk WYRD (106.3 WORD)/Greenville-Spartanburg, SC, it was announced that Bob McLain will be stepping down from his fulltime responsibilities. His final afternoon broadcast will be Dec. 22. In a staff memo announcing McLain’s impending departure, SVP/Market Manager Steve Sinicropi said, “Bob’s commitment to excellence and dedication to our business will forever be appreciated. We’re very excited for Bob as he enters his next chapter with 106.3 WORD. He has been a consummate professional and I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors. Congratulations Bob!”
The good news is, McLain will remain a presence on WORD, as Sinicropi noted, “While Bob will now be spending more time on the golf course, and with his wife Brenda, I’m pleased to announce he will remain on our team in a limited capacity, continuing to be heard as the host of The Bob McLain Minute, which will air each weekday afternoon, serving as a fill-in host, and will continue to be a spokesman and endorser for some of our clients’ on-air advertisements.”
McLain issued his own memo that reads, in part, “June of 2020 marked 57 years since my introduction to the business that would become my life’s work: broadcasting. It’s been an amazing journey that has taken me from playing 45 RPM records on turntables, to covering two Super Bowls, to the last nearly 20 years in the place I love most — the Upstate of South Carolina. I have been blessed to have had many different careers — disc jockey, TV sportscaster, meteorologist, news anchor and finally, talk show host.” He added, “There comes a time when you realize you have done the best you could and it’s time to step aside. I’m confident that 106.3 WORD will continue to be the dominant voice of talk radio in the Upstate for decades to come. I’m proud to have been a part of making it what it is.”
McLain continued, “I may no longer be here to drive home with you each afternoon but I’m not going away either. I’ll still be offering my opinions on a daily basis, still speaking for our clients and still thinking of you all. Thank you for making the final part of my career the best part. With love and gratitude.”
