Saga Milwaukee Flips ‘Energy’ To Oldies
• Saga’s Milwaukee Radio Group just performed a non-April Fools Day stunt, flipping Top 40 WNRG (Energy 106.9) to “Milwaukee’s Pure Oldies 106.9 FM,” playing the best music from the late ’50s through the ’60s. Sporting new call letters WRXS, the station is currently rolling commercial-free.
Moments after the switch was thrown, Milwaukee Radio Group VP/GM Bob Bellini said, “The ’60s will always be remembered as an important decade of change in society, in fashion, in our culture, and in the music — from iconic ’50s artists who popularized rock & roll, to the British Invasion, Motown, Pop, Doo-Wop, and Top 40 hits that were fun and upbeat. Pure Oldies 106.9 is Milwaukee’s new home for those great songs and artists that dominated the charts.”
Indeed, Milwaukee’s Pure Oldies 106.9 will play hits from The Supremes, The Beatles, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Dave Clark Five, Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Mamas & Papas, Elvis Presley, and so many more!
The philosophy behind this choice of format is explained in the press release, which reads, “Pure Oldies 106.9 will reach a vast audience of listeners who have been under-served by formats that have forgotten this ‘golden era’ of music! Pure Oldies 106.9 perfectly complements the next age of Classic Rock heard on Milwaukee’s Hometown Rock, 96.5 WKLH, as well as the next age of classics on WHQG (102.9 The HOG), Everything That Rocks!”
