Onward & Upward For Frito & Katy
• There has been a significant disturbance in the morning radio landscape in the Bryan-College Station, TX region, as ten-year morning duo Tucker “Frito” Young & Katy Dempsey did their final show on Bryan Broadcasting Top 40 KNDE (Candy 95)/Bryan-College Station, TX on Friday, Dec. 31 as they pack for what we are told is an exciting major market opportunity TBA.
Their timing couldn’t be more advantageous — KNDE is coming off a 2021 Marconi win for CHR Station Of The Year, and Morning Candy With Frito & Katy took home the Marconi for Small Market Personality of The Year — add those to three previous Crystal Radio Awards, two more Station of the Year Marconi’s, and a 2021 Service to Community Award.
Needless to say, Frito & Katy’s final Morning Candy show was emotionally charged, as GM Ben Downs explains to RAMP, “Here in the small markets, we let the stars run until the very last day. It’s a trust thing. It was a great show with a focus on listener texts, tears, and format-breaking songs about leaving.” The show’s sign-off is posted at candy95.com. Later, Frito told RAMP, “We’re so grateful for an amazing run on Candy 95 and looking forward to what’s next!”
Making the duo’s departure even more challenging, Frito also doubled as OM of the group, and Dempsey also served as PD of KNDE. Ben Downs is now actively seeking a new PD and a morning show for KNDE. Qualified candidates should make their presence known to him ASAP at ben@bryanbroadcasting.com.
