Axel Lowe Leaving Cumulus Atlanta
• Late Monday we learned that, after a remarkable three-decade run with Cumulus Atlanta, Axel Lowe has tendered his resignation as PD of WNNX (99X), effective this Friday, as he sets out to pursue new adventures.
The news of Lowe’s impending departure was delivered to the staff in an email from Atlanta VP/Market Manager Sean Shannon, titled “30 Years Is A Lifetime.” The email, obtained by RAMP, reads, “Our friend, our colleague, our teammate and our playmate Axel Lowe has made the difficult decision to hang the headphones up here at Cumulus Atlanta to seek new challenges. Words cannot express my gratitude, personally, to Axel for all that he has done to make our products better each and every day he came to work. Case in point is the work that he’s done in launching 99x so successfully.”
Shannon continued, “As the person who single-handedly built a station’s music from scratch with an ear to the past on an iconic brand, what Axel has done is miraculous. But that’s Axel in a nutshell: a can-do attitude in any and all situations, the kind of teammate you hope for and a genuinely good human being to boot. To say that this is a loss for our family is a profound understatement. But we as an organization, and I as an individual, want the best for every on our team and Axel believes that it’s time for a change. And after 30 years with us, I think Axel has earned the opportunity to chase his dreams with our full-throated support.”
Lowe was an original crewmember of the original 99X from its 1992 launch until its demise in 2008. He later did afternoons on sister WNNX (Rock 100.5), working his way up to the PD chair in 2019. He was named PD of the relaunched 99X earlier this year.
Shannon noted that Lowe’s last day on the air will be this Friday, March 31. He added, “We’ll find a date in the next several weeks to plan a celebration of Axel that befits his enormous contributions to us. Please join me, sad as we may be, in wishing Axel the very best in the future.”
