Alumni Run Amok At WMSC
Montclair University’s radio station, 90.3 WMSC-FM/Upper Montclair, NJ proudly presents its Ninth Annual Alumni Takeover Week. The weeklong event got underway yesterday, organized once again by Tom Kaminski from WCBS-AM/New York (Class of ’84), Gene Sower (Class of ’80) and Anthony Mennutti (Class of ’00).
The WMSC “Alumni Takeover” began in 2009 after Montclair State’s WMSC alumni approached the station’s management seeking to take over the station the week of spring finals, relieving undergraduate student DJs from their show schedule. Management agreed, and every year since then, Kaminski, Sower and Mennutti lead the recruitment of alumni DJs via social media and an email blast. “Montclair State University and WMSC provided the foundation for my 30-year radio career in radio and it’s a privilege to be back on their air and pay it forward by spending time with students who love the medium,” said Kaminski.
Now in its ninth year, the “Takeover” has brought alumni from around the country back to their alma mater and back to the airwaves of WMSC, including Kaminski, Bob Williams of WKXW (New Jersey 101.5)/Trenton and our buddy Jana Polsky Deneroff of Westwood One. “It’s radio’s homecoming!” said Anabella Poland, GM of WMSC. “It gives our undergraduate students a chance to connect and network with alumni some of whom started their radio career right here. It also gives our graduates the opportunity to mentor the new generation of DJs.”
WMSU Station Manager Juan Contla (Class of ’17) remarked, “The memories alumni share from back in the day always remind us why we joined WMSC in the first place. The career stories they share are a reminder of where this path can take us.” Complete details, along with the Alumni Takeover on-air schedule is posted online.
