Remembering Jim Carson
• Among the many luminaries we lost during the month of December was major market pro Jim Carson, famous for his stints at KFRC/San Francisco, KGB/San Diego and some 40 years on Los Angeles radio, 22 of those years at KRTH (K-Earth 101), who died on Dec. 29.
In a heartfelt Facebook tribute, industry vet Mike Kinosian said of Carson, “‘Legend’ is a word tossed around too freely in the entertainment industry, but Jim WAS legendary here in Southern California. It was the utmost privilege and honor for me to have spent six years as a National Programming Consultant for Los Angeles-based Drake-Chenault. Part of my duties was to program our syndicated Adult Contemporary format, ‘Contempo 300,’ for which Jim was the voice. Not only was he a perfect match for the 25-54-targeted format, but Jim was also the quintessential pro every step of the way. This was a guy who just plain was fun to be around and had fantastic radio stories. It was only fitting that this terrific person — a tremendous communicator — worked at marquee radio stations. My sincere sympathy to his family and numerous friends.”
• Dave Sholin was kind enough to share this awesome video of Carson discussing his amazing career in a one-hour 2022 conversation with Dick Lyons on I Remember Radio.
• A Celebration of Life for Jim Carson will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2pm at one of his favorite hangouts — El Patio, 4351 Township Avenue in his hometown of Simi Valley, CA. Jim’s son will have a microphone in place so that his father’s many friends and colleagues can share their favorite memories.
