Rochester Ponders Radio Minus Spezzano

• Rochester Radio royalty Scott Spezzano, co-host of Spezzano & Sandy on Audacy Adult Hits WBZA (98.9 The Buzz)/Rochester announced he will be closing out his 50-year broadcast career on December 18.

“Radio has basically been my entire life,” said Spezzano, who has spent his entire half-century radio career in the Rochester market, starting at the age of 15 (he turns 65 on Dec. 5), made his emotional announcement Thursday morning alongside his equally emotional longtime co-host Sandy Waters. “I started doing this when I was a kid,” Spezzabo  noted. “And somehow, while I was busy coming in every morning and doing another show, 50 years happened — I’ve gotten married. I’ve become a dad. I’ve made friendships that will last the rest of my life. And I’ve had generations of people come up to me and say, ‘I listened to you when I was a kid,’ which, by the way, is a horrifying thing to hear when you’re trying to convince yourself you’re still 38.”

Spezzano has been partnered with Sandy Waters since 1999, starting on Top 40 98 WPXY before crossing the hall to WBZA in September 2014.

“I’m not going to make this a funeral,” he insisted. “I’m still here. In fact, I did the math. Starting today, we’ve got about 57 shows left together. And I want those 57 shows to be fun.”

In closing, Spezzano added, “As for what’s next? I don’t completely know yet. And for probably the first time in my adult life, I’m actually okay saying that. I’m not retiring. I’m not disappearing. I’m just closing one really big chapter and figuring out what the next one looks like. We’ll have plenty of time between now and December 18th to talk about all of this.”

Please take a few precious minutes to read Spezzano’s candid and heartfelt announcement posted to Facebook.

Waters will continue in mornings following Spezzano’s retirement.
