Radio HOF Exhibit A Work Of Art
• To say this has been an eventful week for “Radio’s Best Friend, ” Art Vuolo, would be an understatement — not only did Art’s alma mater, Eastern Michigan University publish a beautiful profile piece about Art’s amazing and selfless career, but, as a breathless Art relates to RAMP, “My accountant told me I’m getting a refund on my taxes, a dear friend is coming for a visit, some money owed to me for more than two years ago just showed up in my mailbox… AND now this… ” Yes, the TALKERS editorial board announced that Art has been named as the recipient of the publication’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Vuolo added, “Ironically, the news came to me first from longtime friend, and top-notch news personality Rob Milford, who was the very first person that I ever recorded on video in 1979 at Stereo KWK in St. Louis. It seemed fitting and the accolades have been coming in droves… I’m truly humbled.”
Art will receive his major award during the closing reception at TALKERS 2018: Full Speed Ahead! on Friday, June 8 in New York City.
But wait! There’s more! The Radio Hall of Fame, located inside the Museum of Broadcast Communications in downtown Chicago, is developing a permanent exhibit called, “A History of the American Disc Jockey,” built around Vuolo’s massive archives of over 1,000 videos. Visitors will be able to search and view the recordings at computer stations, and eventually, people around the world will be able to access this priceless collection online.
In announcing this amazing, Vuolo-centric exhibit, Radio Hall of Fame Chairman Kraig Kitchin expressed the thanks of a grateful industry “for all the hours and years that Art has toiled at properly recording the best efforts in radio studios for decades and decades.” Ever the humble servant of his craft, Art said, “What I’m known for more than anything now is being an archivist… preserving radio for future generations.”
