Astroworld Death Toll Reaches Ten
• Nine-year-old Ezra Blount on Sunday became the 10th — and youngest — person to tragically die from injuries sustained at the ill-fated Astroworld Festival in Houston.
The New York Times reports that boy had been in a medically induced coma from injuries his family believes he sustained after being trampled at the Nov. 5 festival, headlined by Travis Scott and attended by some 50,000 fans. The situation took a deadly turn after a crowd surge occurred near the stage during his performance, that has now taken ten lives and left more than 300 people injured. Authorities are still trying to determine the cause.
Ezra was on the shoulders of his father, Treston Blount, awaiting Drake‘s appearance, but the crowd surged and the two became separated during the panic that ensued. Mr. Blount said passed out from lack of oxygen, and when he regained consciousness he had no idea where Ezra was. By the time they were reunited, his son had swelling in the brain as well as “trauma in nearly all organs,” Mr. Blount wrote. As Ezra spent the rest of his days in a hospital, his father documented his son’s condition on the family’s GoFundMe page, where thousands of people have so far made donations in excess of $90,000 at press time.
The Blount family previously filed a lawsuit against Travis Scott; Live Nation Entertainment and others. Dozens more have filed lawsuits, and the Houston Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation into the festival. “This should not have been the outcome of taking their son to a concert, what should have been a joyful celebration,” said Ben Crump, the attorney who represents the Blount family. “Ezra’s death is absolutely heartbreaking.”
