Condolences: Richard “Box” Bachschmidt

• We were saddened to hear the news that longtime Charleston, SC radio veteran Richard “Box” Bachschmidt, was found dead last Friday morning of an apparent suicide. According to The Charleston Post and Courier, Box, 43, was last seen on Tuesday, June 26 at his home on James Island. He told his roommate he would be right back and then left in his blue Honda Element, family spokeswoman Jessica Munday said. Box’s family and friends became concerned after he uncharacteristically missed several work meetings on Wednesday. Tyler Boone, a friend and local musician, said Bachschmidt had been open about his struggles with depression, but added that this behavior was unlike him.

Bachschmidt was most recently morning co-host on LM Communications’ Triple A WCOO (105.5 The Bridge)/Charleston, SC until February of this year, when he resigned and launched a podcast. Bachschmidt previously programmed iHeartMedia News-Talk WSCC-AM/Charleston and was APD of Cumulus News-Talk WWTN (SuperTalk 99.7 WTN)/Nashville.

In a statement, Box’s sister, Dawn Bachschmidt Hoskins, said, “Richard was a such an incredible man with an infectious personality and a heart of gold. He will be missed terribly. The outpouring of love, prayers and support from the Charleston community is holding up our family and for that, we are forever grateful.”

A Facebook page has been established for Box’s friends and colleagues to donate to pay for funeral expenses.
