Remembering Lee Randall
• Over the weekend we learned the sad news that legendary Texas programmer and consultant Lee Randall had died.
Randall, probably best known for his lengthy run at KTSA/San Antonio, also worked at KIMN in his hometown of Denver, as well as at KFJZ/Dallas-Ft. Worth, WACO/Waco and KILT 610/Houston. He was also instrumental in flipping KKBQ/Houston to Country and was the original host of Powerline before Brother John Rivers.
Chris Baker, PD of Cumulus Sports-Talk duo WWLS (98.1 The Sports Animal) and KWPN (ESPN 640)/Oklahoma City told RAMP, “Some of the PDs who trained under Lee in their early years include Rob Roberts, Bob Perry, Jeff Garrison and myself. And I know there are many others.I worked with Lee at KZZB (B-95)/Beaumont, TX from 1986-1988, and we had never been No. 1 until Lee arrived. We then hit No. 1 twice in four books, and Top 2 the other two.”
Rob Roberts recently returned to Texas as Director of Branding and Programming for Cox Media Group Classic Hits KONO 101.1 and Hot AC KSMG (Magic 105.3)/San Antonio. He recalls his valuable learning experience working with Randall, saying, “I worked with Lee when he was consulting KRLB-FM 99 in Lubbock and I became PD under his guidance. We took the station to over a 30 share 12+ in the mid-’80s. He taught me how to make a radio station great.”
Randall will be posthumously inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame© as an esteemed member of the Class of 2019 on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Texas Museum of Broadcasting and Communications in Kilgore.
