Harper A Strong Island Move For JVC
• Perennial Long Island radio fixture Steve Harper has been wisely acquired by locally owned and operated JVC Broadcasting, where his talents will be utilized in multiple ways, including afternoon drive on Oldies 98.1 (W251BY/WPTY-HD2)/Long Island and with the company’s NTR division, Long Island Events. Harper will also work with the creative team at JVC to develop new digital opportunities at various JVC facilities.
JVC has been in rapid staff expansion mode of late, continuing the company’s strategy of live, local and fun radio, and Harper’s hire is just the latest chapter. Harper’s four-decade radio career — all of it spent on Long Island — began at the age of 17, when he became the youngest afternoon drive announcer in America on WYFA 1580. From there it was onto Top 40 WBLI, where he reigned for over two and a half decades, followed by stints at WBEA (101.7 The Beach)and 92.9 WEHM, and most recently, a decade in mornings on Connoisseur Media AC WKJY (K-98.3)/Long Island until last November.
JVC NY GM Bruce Shepard said, “Steve is a great addition to our staff. He will not only be on the airwaves of JVC, but he will also work with the team of Long Island Events, the JVC NTR Company to develop new and exciting live events and festivals. I am thrilled to have him on board.” JVC Media President & CEO John Caracciolo added, “Having someone like Steve, with his talent and skill set is a complete win for us. His job will be to use that contact list that he has developed over the years to help JVC create new and exciting opportunities both on the air and on site. This is live, local and hometown radio the way it is supposed to be. Steve will work very closely with our sales team and our on-air team. This is a huge win for JVC… we are so lucky to have him.”
Harper remarked, “I’m thrilled to be part of such a dynamic, live and local radio organization like JVC Broadcasting, and I’m looking forward to helping JVC continue to grow and prosper.”
