Wheeler Leaving FCC Jan. 20
Yesterday, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler announced he intends to step down from the Commission on January 20, 2017… right around the same time that Donald Trump is sworn in. Coincidence? We think not. Wheeler, a Democrat, had served as Chairman for more than three years. In a statement, Wheeler said, “Serving as FCC Chairman during this period of historic technological change has been the greatest honor of my professional life. I am deeply grateful to the President for giving me this opportunity. I am especially thankful to the talented Commission staff for their service and sacrifice during my tenure. Their achievements have contributed to a thriving communications sector, where robust investment and world-leading innovation continue to drive our economy and meaningful improvements in the lives of the American people. It has been a privilege to work with my fellow Commissioners to help protect consumers, strengthen public safety and cybersecurity, and ensure fast, fair and open networks for all Americans.”
Shortly thereafter, in a series of tweets, Wheeler added, “I’m proud of our accomplishments: ensuring faster, open networks; improving universal access; protecting consumers & unleashing spectrum;” “The crucial role of communications technology as a promoter of innovation, job creation and civic engagement cannot be overstated;” “The great work of the dedicated @FCC staff remains critical as broadband networks continue to drive our economy & promote free expression;” before wrapping up with, “I am thankful to have had the chance to work with my fellow Commissioners @MClyburnFCC @JRosenworcel @AjitPaiFCC @MikeOfcc.”
