Condolences: David Jones

David Jones, former longtime Providence radio vet and a member of the Rhode Island Radio and Television Hall of Fame has died, according to WPRI-TV.

Jones’ radio career spanned more than four decades, beginning in the late ’60s on WICE with Davey Jones Locker before he moved over to WPRO-FM for afternoon drive. Jones also worked in Boston radio in the mid-’80s, including part-time at the late 94.5 WZOU, but he later returned to Providence as co-host of Jones & Joan in the Morning alongside Joan Edwardsen at WSNE, a partnership that lasted 17 years until late 2002.

More recently, Jones co-hosted Jones & Heather in the Morning with Heather Gersten on Cumulus AC WWLI (Lite Rock 105) until he was replaced by Stephen Donovan in December 2013. In tribute to Jones, Lite 105 posted a message on its Facebook page, along with this photo: “Lite 105 is sad to hear about the passing of former Lite 105 Morning Host and RI Radio & TV Hall of Famer David Jones. He enjoyed 7 years on the air here as part of the ‘Jones & Heather’ morning show. We all send our sincere condolences to David’s family in Florida.”

David Gariano, former PD of WZOU/Boston, tells RAMP, “David had already had a remarkable career with PRO-FM when I hired him for part-time and fill-in work in at ‘ZOU. A truly New England kind of guy.  He went back to Providence and had a highly successful run in mornings there. David was a character and will be missed by all he loved and touched.”
