Remembering Courtney Nelson
• We would be remiss if we didn’t pause to pay our respects to a beloved Texas radio pro who died shortly before Christmas — Courtney Nelson passed away on Saturday, December 14, the tragic result of a motorcycle accident. He was only 59 years old.
Nelson most notably spent 25 years with Townsquare Media El Paso, starting as an overnight jock and later doing mornings on Active Rock KLAQ from 1986-1992. He went on to program Hot AC sister KSII (93.1 Kiss FM) and served as OM/PD of KLAQ until his departure in January 2012. Later that year Nelson and his family relocated to San Antonio, where he went to work for Cox Media Group, serving in various roles (as “Dave Brooks“) for Country KCYY (Y100) and Classic Country KKYX.
There is a tribute to Nelson posted on the KKYX website, and we would especially like to draw your attention to the heartfelt remembrance posted by KLAQ midday jock Glenn “Dubba G” Garza, who was originally hired by Nelson and credits him for “showing him the ropes” of the radio business. “It’s impossible to sum someone up in a few words and even harder for Courtney as he was such an amazing man,” Garza wrote. “Professionally, he wore many hats over the years as a morning show host, production director, program director, operations manager, outside of work, the titles he held most dear were father and husband. He leaves behind a wife, a son and a daughter along with a fatherhood bar set so high, I doubt anyone will ever top it.”
