Remembering Mark Strauss
• We’ve lost yet another radio vet — Mark Strauss, a fixture on Louisville radio since the early ’80s, most recently doing middays on W&B Broadcasting Classic Hits WAKY/Louisville died of an apparent heart attack on Oct. 24 at the age of 71.
Strauss’ Louisville radio history with WAKY began back in 1981, where he served as Production Director, and later, PD. After eight years out of broadcasting, Strauss rejoined WAKY in March 2009.
According to WAKY’s Facebook page, Strauss wrote his own obituary — a reflection of his sense of humor. Described as his “earthly signoff,” Strauss noted, “It pains me to admit it, but apparently I have passed away, and I’m pissed about it… Everyone said it would happen one day, but that’s simply not something I wanted to hear, much less experience. If you want to, look for me in the evening sunset, on a cruise ship, with a Patron margarita in hand. You know I’ll be there in one form or another. This will probably comfort some while antagonizing others, but you know me, it’s what I do. Any questions, sorry too late.”
Strauss is survived by his wife Jeri, daughters Rebecca Dodge and Stephanie (Matthew) Perry, and his beloved granddaughter, Reece, who called him “Dude,” as well as two chair/bed hogs, Oscar and Koda.
Strauss’ daughter Becca has taken over moderating her dad’s Facebook page and has been responding to the folks who have expressed their condolences online.
