The Drive Salutes The Loop
• It’s still hard to fathom that today marks the last full day of service for Chicago’s iconic Classic Rocker WLUP (97.9 The Loop). The operation of the station is slated to transfer from Merlin Media to new owner Educational Media Foundation on Saturday.
In what we would accurately describe as a classy and respectful send-off to a longtime crosstown rival, Hubbard Radio Classic Rock WDRV (97-1 The Drive) will present a “Salute to The Loop” throughout the workday on Friday.
The tribute will launch with a very special edition of The Drive’s “Ten at Ten” feature. Chicago rock radio veteran Bob Stroud will curate the music and memories that span WLUP’s four decades of service to the Windy City while welcoming fans to 97-1 FM The Drive — Chicago’s Classic Rock.
As Drive PD Rob Cressman tells RAMP, “We look forward to unveiling archived audio from The Loop’s rich life and presenting first-hand accounts of what WLUP meant to Chicago’s Rock & Roll history. Bob Stroud, Steve Seaver, Phil Manicki, Matt Bisbee and many other WLUP alumni now call WDRV home. Their recollections and aural time capsules will honor the legacy of The Loop throughout the day. Oh, and a few special surprises are planned along the way, as well.”
