Remembering WMXZ/Charleston’s Mike Edwards
• Details are still unclear, but we were saddened to learn of the passing of Mike Edwards, longtime PD and co-host of the top-rated Two Girls and a Guy morning show on Saga Hot AC WMXZ (Mix 95.9)/Charleston, SC.
In an Instagram post, Edwards’ emotionally devastated co-hosts Brooke Ryan and Tanya Brown explained that Edwards had not shown up for work on Thursday morning, and after multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact him, they called 911 to do a wellness check, and found Edwards deceased.
Edwards’ love of radio started at the age 14 at a small community station in Pocahontas County, WV. He arrived in Charleston in 1994 as the Program Director of WSSX (95SX), and did afternoon drive until 1999, when he moved up mornings to create the Two Girls & a Guy morning show alongside Brooke Ryan and Tanya Brown. Ryan left the show in October 2010 and went to work at WRQX/Washington, while Edwards and Brown went on to do mornings together on Alpha Media Top 40 KBFF (Live 95.5)/Portland, OR until August 2014, when they got the band back together and reunited on WMXZ, then owned by Apex Broadcasting.
Edwards is a multi-year winner of “Charleston’s Best Of” Radio Morning Show and Local Radio Personality awards, and was a huge supporter of the Charleston Animal Society and Charleston Pride Week.
In a statement, Paul O’Malley, President of Saga’s Charleston Radio Group said, “Mike was an amazing person, beloved by his coworkers, listeners and our entire organization and will be truly missed by those fortunate to have crossed his path.”
Ryan said, “We don’t know what the future holds or what it’s going to look like, but thank you all for your support… and thank you for loving Mike.”
We are told that Friday’s show will be a “Best of Two Girls & a Guy” montage featuring some of Mike Edwards’ best bits. Brooke & Tanya will return on Monday to pay tribute to their dear friend and colleague.
