‘Wicked Long Walk’ Begins With Single Step
Co-host Kennedy, who has been very candid about her own mental health issues, will embark on “Kennedy’s Wicked Long Walk” tomorrow, starting at 5am in Wellesley and finishing 11.1 miles later in Brookline — a very visible method of raising awareness — and money — for this vital cause. The good news is, the initial goal was announced as $5,000, which was reached shortly thereafter, so that bar was raised to $10K. [As of Sunday evening, nearly $12,000 had already been raised]
Kennedy is on the board of Samaritans, a local suicide prevention organization. “When Samaritans started a new initiative called ‘Hey Sam’ — a mental health text line that was created in the wake of the pandemic by young people for young people, I wanted to do more,” she said. “Hey Sam speaks to these people where they are, in their language, and gives a safe space to talk about anything. They’ve started thousands of conversations in these two years and will continue this work — but it costs money. So, I am going to walk 11.1 miles during our show on Tuesday to raise awareness and much-needed funds for this scrappy upstart that I believe will be the leader in showing other organizations how to work with young people. Have I trained? No. Will I be sore at the end? Yep. Will my heart be full? Absolutely.”
