Radio One Brings ‘Classix’ To Atlanta

On Friday, Dec. 22, Radio One Atlanta downshifted the format on BOOM 102.9 (WUMJ HD2/W275BK) from Classic Hip Hop to Classic R&B, now reimagined as Classix 102.9, “Atlanta’s Classic R n B,” playing the biggest Classic R&B songs from the ’70s and ’80s from artists like Rick James, Prince, The Gap Band, Earth Wind and Fire, The Whispers and some classic funk. On January 3, The DL Hughley Show debuts weekdays from 3-7pm, followed on Jan. 16 by the Atlanta return of The Tom Joyner Morning Show.

“Ever since Tom left the market, there has been an outcry for him to return to Atlanta,” said Tim Davies, RVP/GM. “We found the audience for our Boom format was too narrow. By expanding the playlist and launching a fresh R&B sound with the Tom Joyner Morning Show in the morning, and, for the first time in Atlanta, The DL Hughley Show in afternoons, Classix 102.9 will be a great new station for the market, and a perfect complement to our cluster.”

Hurricane Dave, VP of Programming & Ops announced that Erwin “Katt D” Hill has been named as PD of the new Classix 102.9. “We love to promote from within our organization,” he said. “I’ve had the pleasure to see Katt D in his role as APD for Majic 107.5/97.5 and Praise 102.5. There’s no doubt he’s going to do some amazing things in his new role as Program Director of Classix 102.9.”
