Miami’s Lucy Lopez: Free Agent
• RAMP has learned that Lucy Lopez, a fixture at Audacy Rhythmic WPOW (Power 96)/Miami for more than two decades has exited, reportedly due to some corporate restructuring. Lopez announced her own departure in a lengthy Instagram post that read, in part, “After 22 years of living out my dream, I will no longer be on Power 96. There are some major changes coming to my beloved station & it’s time for your girl to move on.”
The Miami Herald picked up the story of Lopez’s exit, and offered this background on how she was initially hired, stating, “Lopez started at Power 96 in 2000. The story of her entry to the station is the stuff of Miami legend. A pair of jocks had the audacity to criticize the women of Hialeah, so Lopez, then still a student at Miami-Dade College, called in to let them know that if they invited her to their show, ‘this girl from Hialeah will run circles around you.’ [Then] Program Director Kid Curry was intrigued and reached out to Lopez. She was soon doing the overnight shift, then the late shift, then afternoons. Once DJ Laz left the morning show, Lopez took over. She was the first Hispanic woman to host a drive time show in Miami, won Miami New Times radio personality of the year in 2020 and held the position of Director of Content at Power 96.”
Lopez also shared her thoughts with from local NBC affiliate WTVJ (NBC 6). “I’m not going anywhere,” Lopez said to reporter Constance Jones. “I promise you guys I’m not going anywhere.” She added, “My microphone was muted… it was not shut off.” No other details are available at this time.
