Minihane Torches His Entercom Bridges

• Entercom has formally cut ties with controversial Sports-Talk personality Kirk Minihane. You may recall that the outspoken Minihane, who spent five years as the co-host of the Kirk and Callahan morning show on Entercom Sports-Talk WEEI/Boston took two breaks from the show twice last year for what were described as “mental health reasons.”

Then, last November Entercom reported that Minihane was leaving the WEEI radio show to launch a new radio show, a podcast (“Enough About Me”) and a column on Entercom’s RADIO.COM digital platform.

It appears that some serious unrest has been brewing behind the scenes for a while — Barrett Sports Media quoted Minihane during a recent remote broadcast as saying, “I want the Kirk Minihane network on Radio.com, where it’s my show, my podcast, other podcasts, other shows for 24 hours a day, that’s it.” He added, “You’ve got one month, Radio.com people, Entercom people, to make that happen, or I’m going to pursue things legally and leave.”

Yesterday, the situation had obviously reached its inevitable breaking point, and, in his usual unfiltered fashion, Minihane, who referred to himself as “the most-sought-after free agent in the history of media,” posted a blistering and profanity-laden “farewell Entercom video” to Periscope.

For its part, Entercom issued its own, more corporate-sounding statement that read, “We have mutually agreed to part ways with Kirk and allow him to pursue other opportunities. Over the years, Kirk has been a valuable member of the WEEI team, and a host of the Enough About Me podcast. We wish him all the best on his future endeavors.”
