Gaga, Ariana, BTS Lead VMAs
• The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards were held Sunday night at various socially distant locations around New York City. Host Keke Palmer started the show by dedicating the broadcast to Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, who died Friday at the age of 43 after a private battle with colon cancer. “We dedicate tonight’s show to a man whose spirit touched so many,” Palmer said. “He is a true hero, not just on screen, but in everything he did. His impact lives forever.”
Mid-show, Vulture.com reported, “The 2020 Video Music Awards have basically been the Lady Gaga Show, and hey, we’re not complaining.” In point of fact, Gaga, Ariana Grande, and BTS led the evening in the number of awards won, taking home four “Moon people” each — Gaga earned the coveted “Artist Of The Year” trophy, while she and Ariana shared the award for “Song of The Year,” “Best Collaboration” and “Best Cinematography” for “Rain On Me;” while Ariana and Justin Bieber shared the pandemic-inspired “Best Music Video From Home” award for “Stuck With U.”
Gaga also took home the inaugural “MTV Tricon Award,” for being a Triple-Icon in 1) music, 2) acting, 3) fashion… and 4) activism — which is actually four things, while The Weeknd won “Video of The Year” for “Blinding Lights.” Not surprisingly, K-Pop supergroup BTS won all four of the categories they were nominated in — “Best Pop,” “Best Group,” “Best Choreography,” and… hang onto something… “Best K-Pop.”
Miley Cyrus scored moon people for “Best Art Direction” and “Best Editing” for “Mother’s Daughter,” Taylor Swift took home the “Best Direction” trophy for her directorial debut for “The Man” from her Folklore album, and Doja Cat was the recipient of the “Push Best New Artist” award.
