‘Gonna Buy Five Copies For My Mother…’
• As the old saying goes, “Good things come to those who wait…” And sometimes those folks have to wait three decades or so, but for my longtime pal Binky Philips and his band, The Planets, the wait was well worth it to see his band’s work reviewed in Rolling-By-God-Stone!
Under the provocative heading of “Song You Need To Know,” the August 12 issue of the rock bible spotlights Binky Philips and the Planets‘ single, “Splitsville Or Bust,” which is colorfully described as “Two and a half minutes of careening punk-metal bile” that “sounds like something that could have been heard blaring out of a downtown New York club in the early Seventies.”
And there’s a reason for that, the article says — “It’s a new and inordinately hooky rocker from a band that started way back when, but has finally, after 27 years, gotten around to making a record.” Indeed, Rolling Stone calls The Planets’ recently released album, Established 1972 NYC, “probably the most belated debut album in rock.”
