Marty Whitney Returns… Again… To 91X

• If you are keeping score at home, San Diego radio fave Marty Whitney is about to embark on his third tour of duty at Local Media San Diego Alternative XETRA (91X)/San Diego, as RAMP has learned that Whitney is set to return to the station — four and a half months after he left the last time — to anchor the 6am to noon shift, starting Monday, June 16.

Whitney’s about-face to the 91X morning show was precipitated by the impending departure of Garett Michaels, Director of Rock Programming and PD of 91X, who, as we reported yesterday, is packing for a move to Everett, WA as the new GM of independent community radio station 90.7 KSER.

It was late January when Whitney’s second stint came to an end when LMSD spun off Adult Hits sister KFBG(100.9 BIG FM) to Lotus Communications.

Whitney’s first tour of duty at 91X was from 2003-2006 under the ownership of Clear Channel, where he served as MD and night jock. He went on to do mornings on Shamrock Alternative KRZQ/Reno until March 2014 before returning to San Diego to do nights on Clear Channel’s KIOZ (Rock 105.3) while adding middays at sister KYSR (ALT 98.7)/Los Angeles. After a stint as a Special Programming Producer for Apple Music’s Beats 1, Whitney made his triumphant return to 91X in October 2019 as morning co-host alongside Danielle Stuht.
