The Current Celebrates Prince’s 60th Birthday
• It’s hard to believe, but today would have been Prince‘s 60th birthday…. to celebrate that bittersweet milestone and his immense musical universe, KCMP (89.3 The Current)/Minneapolis will feature the artist’s 60 Essential Songs. This special program will air today from noon until 5:30pm CT and run all day in a loop beginning at noon on Purple Current, the 24-hour stream dedicated to Prince and the music inspired by him.
The 60 Essential Prince Songs will span the artist’s complete career and will cover his full range of sounds and also include excerpts of Prince himself discussing his music and life. Nine different DJs will provide breaks throughout the program, along with actualities from Lisa Coleman and Dr. Fink of the Revolution, and Har Mar, PaviElle and Alicia Keys. The final 20 minutes of the 60 Essential Prince Songs will include the exclusive “Crazy2Cool” medley from Prince’s 2014 show that he gave to The Current the following year.
“We’ve always tried to honor the music and legacy of Prince,” said Jim McGuinn, Program Director of The Current. “This is the journey through his entire musical career, augmented by his own words with anecdotes form his bandmates and context from our Purple hosts. It’s our way of celebrating Prince’s birthday and the legacy he has left.”
