Audacy’s Mega Move In N.E. PA
• Audacy made the decision to give Spanish CHR more oxygen in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA market, flushing Classic Hits on WMQX (Max 102) and relaunching the station as La Mega 102.3 (with new calls WLMZ pending), playing popular Spanish, Latin and Caribbean currents and a mix of gold and re-currents. The format is simulcast on WODS-AM 1300/West Hazleton, PA.
“The Hispanic population is growing in Northeast Pennsylvania, and this launch represents a significant step in our commitment to serving our local listeners and clients,” said Ryan Flynn, SVP/Market Manager, Audacy Wilkes-Barre. “I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and long hours it took to get this brand up and running. We can’t wait to give the very best of the Hispanic CHR format to our community.”
La Mega 102.3 is under the command of newly named Brand Manager Jonathan Alcantara, the previous keeper of the Mega brand in the market, which had been carried on the HD-2 channel of Audacy Country WGGY and two FM translators (94.9 and 101.3) as “Mega 95,” under an LMA with Alcantara’s company, JDJ Media. Despite its modest beginnings and limited coverage, the station was a success and continued to grow for nearly three years, thus, paving the way for a signal expansion.
“I’m so excited to join the Audacy team in Northeast PA and take the La Mega brand to the next level,” said Alcantara, who started his radio career in his native New England, working at Power 102.9, Impacto 1490AMand La Mega de Boston. “Having the access to Audacy’s resources and the tremendous upgrade of coverage with the 102.3 FM and 1300 AM signals will open up so many new possibilities.”
La Mega 102.3 launched with this initial weekday lineup — 6-10am: The Premiere-syndicated Enrique Santos Show; 10am-3pm: James the Bandit; 3-7pm Jonathan Alcantara. Additional talent announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
