Denver Welcomes Media’s Next Generation

• The National Student Media Convention (NSMC) came to Denver for the first time on October 22-25. Over four days, more than 400 student attendees listened to 45+ media professionals and attended 70 informational sessions to learn valuable skills and techniques to take back to their media organizations at colleges and universities across the country.

On Friday, students attended a career fair mixer where they engaged with recruiters from five broadcasting companies representing over 1200 radio and television stations. Select students were able to follow up on Saturday with one-on-one interviews for internships and entry-level jobs.

NSMC 2025 culminated on Saturday with the presentation of the National Student Production Awards, honoring the best student work in media production across 40 categories. Judges reviewed over 900 entries before honoring three finalists and one winner in each category. A complete list of winners and finalists is available HERE.

CBI also presented The Dave Black Excellence in Advising Award to Daniel Schumacher of Texas State University in recognition of exceptional dedication and service to student electronic media operation.

“Denver has exceeded expectations as a host for the NSMC,” said CBI President Anabella Poland (front and center, with representatives of Loyola University’s WLOYSophia Thornberg, Daniel Carter, Max Nast, Fiona Galang, & OM John Devecka). “The participation by local media professionals was outstanding and the peer-to-peer networking within sessions and roundtables was exciting to see. CBI also hosted two students from WCSB-FM at Cleveland State University who shared their story of their university giving their station away to Ideastream Public Media. I have no doubt that their story inspired our student attendees and their advisors to be even stronger advocates for the value of student-run media on their campuses.”

Mark Your Calendar: NSMC 2026 will be held Oct. 14-17 at the Warwick Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia. To stay up to date, visit askcbi.org/conventions and follow CBI on Instagram at @askcbi.
