Konnor 97: Great Pucking Idea
• Anyone who knows anything about hockey knows the No. 97 is synonymous with one of the best players on the planet — Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers. It just so happens that 97 is also the frequency of Stingray’s Edmonton Classic Rock station CIRK (K-97). With McDavid and his Oilers now in the deep in the midst of the mighty “Battle of Alberta” against their provincial rivals, the Calgary Flames in the second round of Western Conference Stanley Cup playoffs, K-97 has taken the extraordinary promotional step to pay tribute to the player and the hometown team and has rebranded as “Konnor 97” for the duration of the Battle of Alberta. [Ed. note: Easily the most entertaining of these four remaining series].
“We share a love for this city and for the No. 97,” says Konnor 97 morning co-host Terry Evans. “It only seems fitting that we go the distance and let the entire team know that we’re 100% behind them.” Co-host Pete Potipcoe added, “‘Konnor 97’ also sounds way cooler than ‘Kraisaitl,'” referring to a play on the last name of McDavid’s talented teammate Leon Draisaitl. “It’s a blast to share the excitement of the Battle of Alberta with our listeners and the entire city of Edmonton.”
Whether the Oilers win in five games or the series goes the full seven, Konnor 97 will be on the air for the entire run. What happens after that? As Konnor 97 PD Jeff Murray said, “If the Oilers keep going deep into these playoffs, we could be ‘Konnor 97’ for a long, long time!”
