Netflix Radio Venture Is A Joke
• Netflix is expanding its footprint into radio, thanks to a partnership with SiriusXM. As CNBC reports, Netflix announced it would be creating a comedy channel for the satellite radio provider. The channel’s focus will be on material from the Netflix stand-up comedy catalog and highlights from Netflix’s original comedy programming. This marks the first time Netflix has made media content outside of video.
According to the Wall Street Journal, which was the first to report the news, this new venture has been dubbed “Netflix Is A Joke Radio” and it is slated to launch in January 2019.
Entering radio is a new path for the streaming giant, CNBC says, but it could also prove to be a worthwhile advertising tool for its original content. Netflix is planning spend $2 billion on marketing this year, and has said it shifting some of its budgets toward advertising initiatives.
