Remembering Mike Sommers
• We were deeply saddened this weekend to learn of the passing of veteran programmer/consultant and entrepreneur Mike Sommers, who died late Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia after a brief illness. He was only 57 years old.
Sommers, whose given name was Michael Andrzejewski, was born in Rogers City, MI, graduated from Central Michigan University and worked Detroit radio early in his career. Sommers famously spent a decade with Delmarva Top 40 WSTW/Wilmington, DE, serving as PD there from 1992-1997, followed by a stint at downstate sister station WAFL (Eagle 97.7)/Dover, and PD stops at Greater Media Adult Hits WBEN-FM/Philadelphia, Beasley AC WJBR/Wilmington and the former WOCT (104.3 The Colt)/Baltimore — each time commuting from his family home in Hockessin, DE.
In 2009 Sommers expanded upon one of his other loves — his signature salsa — and he and his family created the Freakin’ Fresh Salsa company, which they wholesale to grocery retailers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Sommers was also consulting several radio stations, primarily in Michigan and the Pacific Northwest.
Sommers is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Cecilia (Pippel) Andrzejewski; his sons, Shawn Boesen and Joshua Boesen, daughter-in-law Julie (Venuto), his daughter, Corrin Andrzejewski; his grandchildren, Savannah and Bentley Boesen; his brothers, Scott Andrzejewski (Wendy) and Paul Andrzejewski; many nieces and nephews; as well as his granddog, Millie.
• Visitation for family and friends will be held this Thursday, July 11 from 2-4pm at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808, followed by a Celebration of Mike’s Life at 4pm. Interment will be private. In keeping with Mike’s fun-loving spirit, his family invites everyone to wear Hawaiian shirts for his services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an athletic scholarship fund in Mike’s name at Wilmington Christian School, 825 Loveville Rd., Hockessin, DE 19707.
