RetroRadio, Now With Extra Chernoff
• A few weeks ago, we casually mentioned that Fairleigh Dickinson University’s WFDU (89.1 RetroRadio)/Teaneck, NJ was actively looking for seasoned pros with “a soft spot for the timeless classics of the ’60s and ’70s,” who are “ready to crack the mic again” as a volunteer air personality at this listener-supported, non-commercial station in the shadow of New York City.
We are thrilled to report that our call has been answered, as GM/PD Opie exclaimed, “Exactly the right person saw the post in RAMP!” as she introduced her slightly overqualified hire — none other than NYC radio legend (and Teaneck native) Mark Chernoff, whose five-decade radio career includes stops at WNEW, WXRK (92.3 K-Rock), New Jersey’s mighty WDHA, and 28 years as Brand Manager of WFAN and CBS Sports Radio.
“Mark’s firsthand experience at these cherished radio stations, which our listeners have such fond memories of, will be a true delight for them and an incredible asset for our team,” Opie said.
While Chernoff ostensibly “retired” in 2021, he was quickly hired as a part-time talent by Press Communications Classic Rock WWZY/WBHX (107-1 The Boss)/Monmouth-Ocean, and he made his RetroRadio debut yesterday as host of his own weekly show, Wednesdays from 9am-1pm.
A self-described “radio geek,” Chernoff said, “As a kid, I always slept with a transistor radio under my pillow. I was sad when we moved to Fort Lee just as I was starting high school… I was OK since I could still hear all the radio stations I loved, like WABC and WMCA, before getting acquainted with the FM dial and WOR-FM (later WXLO/99X), WNEW-FM, WCBS-FM, and so many others. I loved (and still love) rock and roll, especially from the late ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.” He added, “After all these years, radio is still fun, and I’m glad to still be working in the business I love.”
Please set a reminder to listen to Chernoff Wednesdays from 9am-1pm ET. Email your congrats to WFDUChernoff@gmail.com. More details are available here.
