WMSC Kicks Off 36-Hour Marathon
• Montclair State University’s award-winning radio station 90.3 WMSC/Montclair, NJ is joining more than 700 stations in 50 countries for the 12th Annual World College Radio Day happening tomorrow, Oct. 7. The station will be live with a 36-hour special programming marathon featuring some of its signature shows and on-air talent, exclusive interviews, music performances, intercollegiate collaborations and much more.
This year’s theme is “Voices for Peace,” showing that student radio stands with all those who are oppressed or suffering from violence, and seeks to champion justice and sustainable peace for all. “As a Ukrainian-American, the theme for World College Radio Day 2022 is deeply personal,” says Station Manager Ben Petruk. “I’m grateful that I’m able to lead the station into this year’s World College Radio Day, uniting for peace, exactly three years after I first joined as a freshman.”
WMSC’s 36-hour marathon will kick off Thursday at 1pm ET with WMSC Unplugged, followed by special editions of fan-favorite shows. When the clock strikes midnight on Oct. 7, World College Radio Day will officially begin on the eastern seaboard with Montclair State University President, Jonathan Koppell, a.k.a. “Dr. K.,” hosting his annual Dr. K’s Vinyl Fantasy Funhouse.
The day will also feature the first ever College Radio Day Mixtape, celebrity interviews with Slash, David Robinson of The Cars, The Happy Fits, and Hip Hop legend Rahzel, and, of course, a stirring round of “Golf Cart Karaoke.” Pictured, (l-r): Jared Tauber, Kyle Pepitone, Celine Da Silva, Yaz Yilmaz, Patrina Geiger, Nate Williams, Tara Morgan & GM Anabella Poland, who notes, “Special programming events such as World College Radio Day offer students an opportunity to work on long-lead preparation, and execution of a high visibility event. Besides working on hours of live programming, gathering relevant content, and promoting it, the event is a fantastic team-building opportunity.”
“This day is incredibly special for everyone,” says Leslie Gallagher, PD of WMSC. “This day reminds me how important it is not only to get involved at the station, but for everyone to come together as one big family. There are so many different people with so many different backgrounds and a celebration like this brings not only WMSC together, but the whole world of College Radio.” The complete schedule of WMSC’s World Radio Day events is posted online.
