WXPN Flips From Digital To Analog
• Sadly, it’s only temporary, as heritage non-comm WXPN/Philadelphia, which operates under the slogan “Vinyl at Heart,” is returning to its roots today, April 10, for the station’s inaugural XPN Vinyl Day.
WXPN Acting PD Jim McGuinn explains to RAMP, “We are turning off the computer and the CD players and going old-school from 6am-midnight with 18 hours straight off the turntables. For some hosts it’s like riding a bike, but for others, this could be the first time they’ve ever cued up a record on the radio!” He added, “We have a bunch of the hosts picking up hours to highlight vinyl from their own collections, and will also welcome Adam Weiner of Low Cut Connie to spin for an hour. It’s the first time we’ve played this much vinyl in years, and we’re psyched to bring the skips and pops back to the air. We’re also setting up a ‘Vinyl-Cam,’ so you can watch the turntables in action all day long.”
The complete XPN Vinyl Day schedule is posted HERE for your convenience.
• This weekend WXPN will also be releasing the third volume of its Homegrown Originals compilation. McGuinn notes, “We took 10 of our favorite recordings of local artists over the past year — (recorded for The Key Studio Sessions, the Free At Noon concert series, XPoNential Music Festival, and World Cafe) — and pressed up a vinyl album, which is being given away to local Indie record stores to give to customers as a gift with purchase on Record Store Day this Saturday, April 12.”
• But Wait! There’s More! WXPN’s legendary longtime Program Director Bruce Warren will personally play four bonus hours of all-vinyl from 10am-2pm on Record Store Saturday! NOW how much would you pay???
