WXPN Relives Live Aid @ 40

• This Sunday, July 13, you are cordially invited to spend the day with Triple A WXPN/Philadelphia as it commemorates the 40th (yes, we are that old) anniversary of the legendary Live Aid concerts by featuring performances from that amazing day in 1985 when the power of music unified the world from both sides of the pond — in Philly and London.

WXPN will play back highlights and sets of music in chronological order matching the event that changed pop forever. Performers include Queen, U2, David Bowie, Hall & Oates, Madonna, Sting, Crosby, Stills, & Nash, The Pretenders, The Hooters, Phil Collins (who famously flew across the Atlantic on the Concorde to play both events) and many more.

Join WXPN hosts Robert Drake and Bruce Warren (who were both there!) from 10am to 8pm ET as WXPN replays sets of music from the shows at Wembley and JFK stadiums, and share stories and interview folks who were there — including The Hooters’ Rob Hyman, WMMR’s own Pierre Robert, and Martha Graham Cracker, who will be leading a Live Aid Tribute event Sunday evening at Union Transfer.

RAMP caught up with Jim McGuinn, Acting PD of WXPN, who said, “I’m so psyched… I’ve been listening to the performances, and putting it all in order for the day. Plus, we’re interviewing Rob from The Hooters — they were the first band onstage in Philly that day, and are still going strong. AND we’re gonna do what used to be unheard of in radio — and invite WMMR’s Pierre Robert to be on the air with us and share his memories.”

McGuinn added, “Both our hosts Robert Drake and Bruce Warren were there that day as fans, but having Pierre on brings it all together – and this also helps promote an event on Sunday night where an All-Star band will play a bunch of the Live Aid tunes and benefit the local Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.” [Live Aid, Philadelphia, 1985 | photo by Vinnie Zuffante / Getty Images]
