Kane-O Hanging Up The Cans
• Last month we saluted our friend Dave “Kane-O” Kane, Rochester radio icon, who had celebrated his 40th anniversary with Entercom Classic Rock WCMF/Rochester, NY! Kane launched his career with WCMF on Feb. 22, 1981 as a semi-fresh-faced 22-year-old kid (pictured below). Later that same year, he was named APD/MD, and went on to program the station from 2008-2010. He currently mans the midday show.
Monday morning, Kane-O announced that his last full-time airshift on 96.5 WCMF is this Friday, April 2, from 10am-2pm, and after largely working remotely for the past pandemic year, he’s back in the studio for the entire week. As Kane-O explains to RAMP, “There are many factors and reasons considered, both professional and personal, and all point in the same direction — ‘It’s Time.'”
He added, “My GM Susan Munn and OM/Brand Manager Bob Barnett have made it very clear that the proverbial door will always be open for yours truly… (granted, it’s the service entrance ’round back, but hey…), and I anticipate remaining close to WCMF moving forward. Y’know… like a ‘Senior Correspondent’ or ‘WCMF Rocker Emeritus,’ if you will. No reason why I can’t (or shouldn’t) continue hosting ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ 2X on Thanksgiving, or, consider re-starting my Bk’fast w/The Beatles program at some point after 20+ years of Sunday morning broadcasts. And as the de facto ‘Rock & Roll Eulogist’ around here, I anticipate being tapped to come in when the inevitable obituaries start showing up for some of the Rock format’s biggest names.”
In closing, Kane said, “So, lots to mull over while I start this retiring thing, and I’m extremely grateful to have these options to mull. This 41-plus-year radio career/adventure has been an incredible, rewarding, unbelievable, wild, & fun ride. I have worked with and for, and met and befriended some of the most favorite people in my life. So, I’m gonna git while the getting’s good.
