Tulsa Radio Legend Joins KBEZ
• Griffin Communications has secured the talents of Tulsa radio icon Mel Myers to do mornings on Classic Hits KBEZ (92.9 The Drive), Monday through Saturday from 6-10am. Myers brings with him a proven track record of success at several Tulsa radio stations including KMOD, 14K/92K, Z104.5 and Star 103.3, and he succeeds another market favorite, 53-year industry vet Andy Barber, who recently stepped down from mornings on The Drive.
“We had a legendary air personality decide to walk away from radio, so we had some really big shoes to fill,” said Dave “Wavy Davy” Michaels, PD of KBEZ. “If possible, you replace them with another legend. That is what Mel Myers is — a Tulsa radio legend.”
The move reunites Myers with Wavy Davy — they used to play together in the Star Band, opening for Styx, Billy Squier and Peter Frampton. (That’s Myers on the left and Wavy on the right). “It’s a pleasure to once again team up with my longtime friend Wavy Davy,” said Myers. “Since he became Program Director at 92.9 The Drive, his familiarity with the people of Tulsa and the music they love enabled him to fine tune the station to be right on target. I’m glad to jump onboard with the Griffin Communications team and help increase The Drive’s successful momentum.”
Steve Hunter, Director of Radio Operations & Programming for Griffin Tulsa, commented, “We couldn’t be happier to have Mel Myers on the team. Mel has been part of so many legendary radio stations over his career. Reuniting him with Jeanne and Wavy Davy is like getting the band back together. I know that Tulsa will enjoy waking up with Mel In The Morning on 92.9 The Drive.”
