• Mary Sandberg Boyle has been formally promoted to Vice President/General Manager of Nexstar News-Talk WGN Radio/Chicago. Ms. Sandberg Boyle has nearly 20 years of media experience, all of it in the Chicago market. She joined WGN Radio in 2015 and was instrumental in the development and launch of The Opening Bell, a weekday morning business show. She went on to hold a variety of positions of increasing responsibility, including Executive Producer and Director of News and Operations. She was named Interim GM a year ago and formally named GM in December 2019, and has led the station through the current COVID-19 pandemic, initiating a series of new policies and procedures designed to improve workflow and keep the staff safe. She has also overseen a number of programming and personnel changes that have increased WGN Radio’s ratings, which are up 31 percent among adults 25 to 54 according to the latest available ratings. Most recently, Sandberg Boyle was responsible for helping to launch WGN Radio’s partnership with WGN America’s NewsNation, providing radio news reports for its mobile app, newsnationnow.
“Mary has done an outstanding job under less-than-ideal circumstances,” said Sean Compton, EVP of WGN America, Antenna TV, WGN Radio and Director of Content Acquisition for Nexstar Media Group. “She is innovative, thoughtful and determined, and she has forged a great working relationship with the staff. She is a respected leader in Chicago media and this promotion is well-deserved. I look forward to WGN Radio’s continued growth under Mary’s guidance.”
Sandberg Boyle said, “WGN Radio is the gold standard of radio stations in Chicago and the Midwest and I am extremely proud to work alongside its talented and dedicated staff. I’m grateful to Nexstar for giving me this opportunity and for allowing me to lead this station into the future. WGN Radio’s best days are still ahead of us.”
