Idol Eying A Comeback?

Could be true… could be crap… the rumor mill is already abuzz that talks are underway to revive American Idol — this time on NBC — the network home of the show that hastened its demise — The Voice. Sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter that NBC has had talks with Fremantle Media about the possibility of bringing back the former singing competition, which reigned for 15 seasons on Fox before it ended last year.

As THR reports, “Few in reality thought American Idol was gone for good when Fox shut it down after 15 seasons, but a broadcast return this soon seemed unlikely. Still, Fremantle has been aggressive in trying to find a new home for the once-global franchise.” The article goes on to theorize that NBC could have a number of rationales for the move — entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt and alternative programming head Paul Telegdy have spoken about the fact that The Voice will likely end up airing annually and not twice a season as it has done since its premiere, possibly freeing up some air time for Idol as a complimentary programming tool. Another possibility, which one source suggests, is that the network is simply looking for leverage in its upcoming negotiation with The Voice producers.

But still… the piece wonders aloud about bringing Idol back at all, saying, “It was a shell of its former self when it finally wrapped up, averaging a 3.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 11 million viewers in its final season. The show came at incredible price tag for Fox, which had to pay astronomical salaries to talent — most notably Ryan Seacrest and Jennifer Lopez.” You are advised to stay tuned!
