Phoenix Now ‘Candy Land’

• Sierra H Broadcasting in Phoenix has hired major market programmer John Candelaria as Director of Content for Old School KAJM (Mega 104.3) and Rhythmic KNRJ (101.1 The Beat), effective Nov. 16. He will succeed Fred Rico, who has decided to step down to spend more time with loved ones in Tucson and Hawai’i.

Candelaria was most recently OM/PD of Beasley Throwback WMGC (105.1 The Bounce) and Urban AC WDMK (105.9 Kiss FM)/Detroit until March of this year. Prior to earning the big Motor City transfer in April 2018, Candy spent six years with Beasley Las Vegas as Urban Format Captain and OM/PD of Rhythmic Oldies KOAS (Old School 105.7) and Hot AC KVGS (Star 107.9). His earlier experience includes nine years with Radio One Dallas as OM of Urban KBFB (97.9 The Beat) and Urban AC KSOC (Old School 94.5). Prior to that, he was best known for his decade in El Paso as OM of the Clear Channel cluster and PD of KPRR (Power 102), KTSM AM-FM & KHEY-FM.

As the press release states, “John brings an incredible track record of success to the stations, along with the perfect philosophy that aligns with our formats, company culture, and growth potential. We are excited with John’s style of leadership, his commitment and understanding of coaching, and his creative, yet data-driven ideas to help grow our brands in our competitive marketplace.”

Candelaria commented, “I’m excited to join Sierra H Broadcasting in Phoenix. My family and I reached out to the folks at Sierra H back in March when COVID set in, and I’m thrilled that my dream has come true. I want to thank everyone on the leadership team for the vote of confidence by entrusting me with the Director of Content role for KAJM and KNRJ. We instantly connected from the first conversation and have spent many hours sharing our passion for radio. This is a perfect match, and I’m fortunate to join a family and fun staff eager to win!”
