Farewell, Funky Larry; Hello, Madd Hatta
• This week marks the end of an era in Houston, as radio legend Funky Larry Jones unplugs, wrapping up an illustrious on-air career spanning nearly 50 years, more than 30 of those years entertaining Houston listeners, and the past four years doing afternoon drive on Radio One’s KMJQ (Majic 102.1) alongside co-host and comedian, Ali Siddiq.
Reflecting on Jones’s remarkable career, Pam McKay, VP/Market Manager of Radio One Houston, remarked, “Funky Larry Jones has been a true star in the world of radio. His dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to his craft proves why he was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and has made him a beloved figure in our community and beyond. We thank him for his incredible contributions and wish him all the best in this new chapter of his life.” To stay updated on Funky Larry Jones, follow him on Instagram @funkylarryjones.
As Funky Larry’s Majic 102.1 tenure comes to an end, Radio One Houston proudly announces his successor — fellow market legend Madd Hatta returns to afternoon drive, starting Monday, Feb. 12. It’s a radio homecoming for Hatta, who first came to prominence in Houston on Majic 102.1 back in 1993 as APD/MD and afternoons, before going on to do mornings on Radio One’s KBXX (97.9 The Box) for more than 20 years, and was a 2014 inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. Since 2020 Hatta has served as Content Director and Operations Manager of Texas Southern University’s KTSU (90.9 The Choice) and Urban Alternative The Vibe.
“I am thrilled to welcome Madd Hatta back to Majic 102.1,” said McKay. “His passion for radio and deep connection with our audience makes him the perfect addition to our lineup. We look forward to sharing in his continued success as he embarks on this exciting new chapter with us.”
