HOF Performance From “TJ The DJ”
• Congratulations to longtime Pittsburgh radio pro Timothy “TJ the DJ” Hess, who will be inducted into Slippery Rock University’s Strategic Communication & Media Hall Of Fame. Hess (Class of ’97) is currently an on-air personality, Commercial Production Assistant, Mix Show Coordinator and cluster event DJ for Audacy Pittsburgh.
Interestingly, Hess began his radio career in the building at the legendary WBZZ (B94)/Pittsburgh in 1997 as an intern for Bender (currently at iHeart’s 95.7 The Jet/Seattle), and later, as webmaster for Bender Morningsat the former WDRV (96.1 The River)/Pittsburgh before moving to Arizona as the Production Director for the Hot Mix Radio Network, returning home to Pittsburgh in 2001.
Hess also works with NFL Films in their Enhanced Audio division and has served as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ pregame DJ. He was also nominated twice for Mix Show DJ of the Year for his work on WBZZ (100.7 Star). As professional DJ, TJ has opened for dozens of musical acts, from Morgan Wallen and Flo Rida to Journey and Hugh Jackman. He’s also the resident DJ at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh.
“I’ve been surrounded by so many rock stars in the industry since the later half of the ’90s and grew up on Pittsburgh’s finest radio jocks of the ’80s,” Hess said. “I’ve always wanted to continue (to this day) their overall passion for radio and its influence on me and demonstrate it in my own worth ethic. I hope I’ve made them — and continue to make them — all proud.”
The official induction ceremony is on October 11, 2024, at Slippery Rock. Hess can be congratulated at timothy.hess@audacy.com or via his website, TJtheDJ.com.
