Suns Celebrate 50 Years Of Al McCoy
• Legendary broadcaster Al McCoy has served as “The Voice” of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns since first donning the headset back in September 1972. McCoy’s 50-year tenure with the Suns is now the longest consecutive run with one team by a broadcaster in NBA history. This Wednesday, March 2, the Suns — and fans — will honor McCoy’s remarkable half-century of service during “Al McCoy Night.” The evening will be dedicated to celebrating McCoy’s illustrious broadcasting career through memorable moments and highlights from the past five decades.
Prominent voices across sports and entertainment have been sharing their admiration for McCoy and his contributions to the industry through video messages that will play throughout the game on March 2, and the remainder of the regular season.
The first 10,000 fans in attendance will receive a “Shazam” placard bearing McCoy’s signature 3-pointer phrase, courtesy of Arizona Sports, and a limited-edition “Al McCoy 50th Season” t-shirt will be sold, along with a commemorative 50th season lapel pin.
No one is prouder of Al McCoy than his son, Mike McCoy, Operations Manager of Stephens Media Group’s WRMM (WARM 101.3), WZNE (Zone 94.1) & WFKL (Fickle 93.3)/Rochester, NY, who will be in attendance Wednesday night when his father is honored. “I remember engineering his broadcasts early on for a couple seasons when I was in high school — and that was a long time ago,” McCoy laughs. But seriously, he told RAMP. “I’m proud of pops — 50 years is quite an accomplishment. More than that, it’s the example he set for me with his work ethic and always taking time for everyone, from the youngest fan to the biggest superstar. When I grow up I wanna be just like him!” And from one icon to to another, McCoy said legendary Dodgers’ broadcaster Vin Scully called to congratulate his dad a few days ago.
McCoy was inducted into the Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor in 2017.
