O’Riordan’s Death Ruled Accidental

• The official cause of death of Cranberries’ lead singer Dolores O’Riordan was accidental drowning due to alcohol intoxication. According to Variety, that’s the word from an inquest into her death that took place at Westminster Coroner’s Court. The Irish singer was found dead in the bath of a London hotel in January. The inquest heard that there was no evidence of injuries or self-harm and the coroner has ruled her death was an accident.

O’Riordan, the mother of three, was found on the morning of Jan. 15 at the Hilton in London’s Park Lane. The inquest heard that O’Riordan’s blood alcohol reading was four times over the legal limit for driving. She was also taking prescription drugs. U.K. police had already said her death was not suspicious. The coroner at the inquest, which was held on what would have been O’Riordan’s 47th birthday, said her death was a “tragic accident.”

In a statement, The Cranberries said, “Today we continue to struggle to come to terms with what happened. To see how much of a positive impact she had on people’s lives has been a source of great comfort to us. We’d like to say thank you to all of our fans for the outpouring of messages and their continued support during this very difficult time.”
