Remembering Norman Schrutt
• We were saddened to hear the news that former longtime Cap Cities/ABC exec-turned-talent agent Norm Schrutt had passed away Tuesday night in Atlanta at the age of 87.
Schrutt notably spent three decades with Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., rising to President of Owned Radio Stations until his retirement in 1996. Schrutt joined Capital Cities in 1963 as an Account Executive at WKBW/Buffalo. In 1971 he was upped to Local Sales Manager, named GSM in 1974 and upped to General Manager in 1977. In 1980 he was tapped to manage the company’s two Los Angeles radio stations — KZLA-AM/FM, and the next year was transferred to Atlanta to manage the new purchase of WKHX-AM/FM. In 1987, when ABC bought Capital Cities, Schrutt was named President of the company’s Radio division.
Since 1997 Schrutt had operated Schrutt & Katz, Inc., in partnership with attorney Joel Katz, which represents many high profile air personalities.
He has also served on the boards of the Country Music Association, Atlanta Better Business Bureau, Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Association of Broadcasters, Atlanta Radio Association and the All Radio Negotiating Committee. Messages of condolence are being posted on Schrutt’s Facebook page. [Some bio info courtesy of the Buffalo Broadcasters Association]
