WAMC Legend Chartock Announces Retirement

• After more than four decades leading Albany, NY-based WAMC/Northeast Public Radio as President & CEO, Alan S. Chartock announced his retirement. Dr. Chartock — simply “Alan” to all — led the transformation of a single local Albany radio station into an award-winning 29-station network serving seven Northeast states.

Chartock was a 39-year-old political science professor at SUNY/New Paltz, NY in 1981 when he took the reins of WAMC when Albany Medical College (hence the WAMC calls) handed over the FM signal. “As I reflect on over 40 years of service to the creation and development of WAMC, I feel it’s time for me to turn things over,” said Dr. Chartock, now 81. “This has been the journey of a lifetime and I have loved every minute, every challenge and every opportunity for growth this work has afforded me. But it’s time to let a new crop of leaders take the helm and I have every confidence that the Board and staff will more than rise to the occasion.”

On the heels of Chartock’s announcement, the Executive Committee of WAMC’s Board of Trustees has named Stacey Rosenberry, Director of Operations and Engineering, as the organization’s interim CEO. Following a strategic planning process now under way, the Board will conduct an executive search for a new CEO.

While Chartock’s retirement is effective immediately, the Board says he stands ready to continue to help in any way. A full celebration in honor of Chartock is being planned for a later date. You can pledge your support now at WAMC.org. [Photo credit: Eric Korenman]
