91X’s Inspiring Initiative

• Local Media San Diego Alternative XTRA (91X)/San Diego announced the second concert in its “Inspired By Music” series — 91X presents SYML with Shane Hall on April 26 at the Music Box downtown. SYML (pronounced “simmel”) is the solo project of Brian Fennel, lead singer of the indie rock band Barcelona. The series’ debut concert this week featured lovelytheband from Los Angeles and San Diego’s Almost Monday.

91X produces the I.B.M. series in collaboration with Belly Up Entertainment, with an emphasis on new music discovery of up-and-coming artists. The initiative donates $1.00 per ticket sold to a grant program operated by the San Diego County Office of Education, to support education utilizing music as part of the curriculum. Funds raised will be available to teachers from San Diego County Public Schools, with four grant categories available to apply for: 1) Music Technology, 2) Teacher Professional Development, 3) Field Trips to Musical Events, Media facilities or Music Museums, and 4) Innovative.

“The inaugural show with lovelytheband and Almost Monday was a great way to kick off the Inspired By Music Series, and we’re looking forward to seeing SYML next,” said Garett Michaels, PD of 91X. “We’re proud to support education in our schools, by introducing San Diegans to exciting new artists, while highlighting the local music scene.”
