Remembering Jim McGaw
• We keep losing legends…. the latest loss is Jim McGaw, a beloved presence on Madison, WI radio for more than four decades, the past 11 years on Audacy Classic Hits 94.9 WOLX, who sadly passed away on Sunday, May 19, reportedly after suffering a heart attack. He would have turned 62 years old in July.
McGaw was a radio rarity who had spent his entire career in the Madison market — before joining WOLX in 2013, initially in afternoons before moving to mornings in 2016, McGaw worked for Midwest Family AC WMGN (Magic 98), joining the station when it flipped from Easy Listening to AC, first doing overnights, and then afternoon drive from 2002-2013. He started his career on the station he grew up listening to — the legendary WISM/Madison, where he worked with fellow Madison radio icon Jonathan Little, now Pres. of TroyResearch.
“Jimmy was witty and so clever. He could do a funny line about a song lyric or song title quicker than anybody I ever knew,” said Little, adding, “Jim was the hardest working and thoughtful person in radio. He was always willing to help and wanted to do whatever he could to make the place where he worked better.”
WOLX has posted a tribute to their dearly departed morning talent. Details on memorial services are forthcoming.
