Seaweed Headed For The Beach
It was just announced that Bay Area radio icon Steve Seaweed, a fixture on area airwaves for the past 44 years — the past 20 in middays on Cumulus Classic Rock KSAN (107.7 The Bone)/San Francisco — will retire after 44 years on the air. His final broadcast will be Friday, June 30 from 10am-3pm PT.
Seaweed’s voice has been heard on a radio somewhere in the Bay Area since 1972 when he made his New Year’s Eve debut on KLRB-FM/Carmel, CA. Six years later, Seaweed made his major market leap up to do weekends at KSAN, which in November 1980 had flipped from Country to free-form Progressive Rock as “The Jive 95.” Seaweed later went on to plug in his headphones at KFAT (“The Wide Spot On The Dial”)/Gilroy, CA, the late KWSS/San Jose and KRQR/San Francisco and KLLC (Alice @ 97.3)/San Francisco before returning to KSAN for good in 1997.
Justin Wittmayer, VP/Market Manager of Cumulus Media San Francisco commented, “I’d like to thank Steven for his contributions to Bay Area radio over the past 44 years. He left his mark on many radio stations and will forever be a part of the KSAN family. He has an open invitation to DJ the (commercial-free) New Year’s Eve overnight shift anytime he’d like… I encourage his fans to make that happen! @stevenseaweed.” KSAN PD Dominic “Zakk” Zaccagnini said, “It’s been a professional thrill to work alongside the ‘Weedman’ in the hallways and follow him each weekday on the air at The Bone. He will be forever be part of the KSAN family.”
Seaweed remarked, “Forty-four years ago, nobody wanted to work at midnight on New Year’s Eve — except me! I volunteered, got the job, and went on to have the most rewarding career in radio. I have been so lucky all these years to have worked with the most incredible people, at many legendary radio stations, and with the best radio listeners on the planet. Thank you, everybody!” From now through June 30, Seaweed will be fondly celebrated by his colleagues, listeners and rock royalty, complete with special on-air guests and farewell stops. KSAN will also send him off to his retirement in style; fittingly celebrating his brilliant career at sea, on a June “Bone-Voyage Cruise” (get it?) for listeners, guests and station staff. More details TBA!
